Laser dentistry refers to any dental procedures that involve the use of a laser. Recent advances in laser technology have allowed many dentists to offer laser treatment. During a dental laser treatment a laser device that transmits a highly concentrated beam of light is used to treat tooth decay, enamel, and gum tissue. Common laser dentistry procedures include oral surgery or periodontal treatment (gum disease, gingivitis) often referred to as laser periodontics, cavity treatment, and teeth whitening.

A laser is a high-technology device that generates a beam of concentrated light. This beam of light brings energy into your mouth to help your dentist remove areas of infection or tooth decay with great precision and accuracy. The laser beam sterilizes the affected area and seals off blood vessels, which minimizes the chance of infection or bleeding.

There are many benefits of laser dentistry. They may include:

    • Faster healing
    • Reduced risk of infection
    • Decreased sensitivity
    • Less time in the dental chair
    • Less bleeding
    • Less post-operative pain
    • Less noise than the traditional dental drill

At Robison Associates, We use four different types of Lasers to assist us in providing dental care.

The Argon Laser is used strictly for soft tissue procedures such as deep periodontal scaling and gum re-contouring. The Erbium Laser is used primarily for hard tissue treatment such as inlay and cavity preparations. In many cases we can treat patients with the Erbium Laser without the need for anesthesia. The Diode Laser, like the Argon Laser, is used for deep periodontal scaling and gum re-contouring. Finally, the Dianodent Laser is used to detect decay in the tooth that can not normally be detected by visual or radiological exam.
